George Orwell coined the term “newspeak” in his book 1984. It is used today to refer to confusing political terms, either euphemisms or redefinitions for governmental evils, like “reproductive health care” for abortion, which does nothing to provide genuine “health care” for either the murdered unborn child or the mother. Today, many ground their views of “social justice” in Amos’ word “justice,” found repeatedly in his prophecies. By substituting the words, “governmental welfare” has been heralded as both biblical and compassionate. But any program that has almost single-handedly destroyed the black family is anything but “compassionate.” Something is fundamentally wrong here. So, what does Amos mean by this word and just how significant is it for us today?
